Why Do Cats Love Cardboard Boxes?

You go out to the pet store in search for the perfect cat toy for your picky feline. You come home and call your kitty to you. You excitedly open the package and dangle the new toy in front of your cat. He pounces, gets a taste of it, and then walks away. You try again but kitty just looks at you with a look that says, “Are you kidding me? This is boring!”

The next day you get a package in a big cardboard box. You take your products out of the box and your cat immediately jumps in. You have to shake your head. Of all the things that gets your cat excited, it is a cardboard box you are about to discard.

Why is this? Why are they attracted to the simple things that we consider trash?

Apparently, they love things they can hide in. They like to be able to surprise and pounce on others.

Cardboard boxes allow them to do just that. They can hide and wait for just the right time to pop up and say, “Boo!”

Because we all know how much cats love cardboard, people have created templates from which you can make your own cat castle. Some are basic while others have multiple floors with small peep windows all over.

Decorative ones can also be found. These are the crazy ones! One look and you will understand. I have seen airplanes and trucks. They are cute though!

How To Properly Apply Diatomaceous Earth To Kill And Prevent Fleas

Diatomaceous earth is a very powerful flea killer and preventative. It is also highly dangerous material if not handled properly.

Get Food Grade

There are several different types of diatomaceous earth you can purchase. You have the type for pools, for farming, and for food. Make doubly sure that the type you get is the food grade version. The other types are potentially lethal to your cat.

Do Not Apply Dry!

Never apply it dry. The powder is very fine. If you breathe it in, it will cause damage to your lungs. It is, after all, the glass skeletons of diatoms. This is why it works so well against fleas.

Always Apply With Water

Mix just one teaspoon in a standard size spray bottle. You don’t need much. The water turns murky when you shake it if you have enough of it mixed in. Spray this solution everywhere you think the fleas live and sleep. Spray your whole perimeter around the house focusing on points of entry.

Flea Dip

Most cats hate baths. If your cat is infested, however, you will need to give him a flea bath. You can wet him with the solution down to his skin and let it dry. You don’t want to rinse it off. Once it dries, the diatomaceous earth will remain and kill off all the fleas.

Cat Flea Protection Short List – Arm Yourself With These Tools To Protect You, Your Cat, And Your Home From Fleas

Fleas are everywhere! They are especially populous during the spring. The warmer temperature and higher humidity levels provide them the perfect breeding environment. Somehow, they always manage to get on our pet cats, even if they are indoor only cats. There is good news, though. Arm yourself with the following and you will be flea free!

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth is an excellent flea preventive, deterrent, and killer. Used and applied properly, it is safe for you, your cats, and your kids. It works by piercing the outer skeleton of fleas. The fleas then die from dehydration and of course the wounds. It’s very powerful! Fleas know what it is and will steer clear of it.

Advantage

Advantage is an excellent product. It works! Apply it monthly and you will never see fleas again. Test it first as some cats can have an allergic reaction to it. Some buy the larger sizes for dogs and just divide it to the appropriate amount for their cats’ weights. The manufacturer, however, does not recommend doing so.

Vacuum Properly

Vacuum regularly to keep your home clean and free from any flea eggs that may have hitchhiked their way inside via your shoes or clothes.

The Cat Genie Automatic Litter Box

This is the CatGenie 120 Self-Washing Self-Flushing Cat Box.

cat genie automatic litter box

It is a pretty neat contraption for cat owners.

As it says, it is self flushing and self washing.

With the Cat Genie, after you set it up, you will probably never have to touch it again. Except to refill granules or to replace them when they get old.

It’s got different settings you can use. You can set it to clean twice a day, once a day, or 10 minutes after your cat has gone. It has a cat sensor to let it know when a cat has used it. It also has a manual button that you can use whenever you want to clean it.

It takes about half an hour for it to go through the whole process. It chops up the poop, it washes the granules with its own detergent which contains anti-odor stuff. It then proceeds to blow dry itself and then it is ready for the next cat.

I think it’s a pretty neat litter box. Although I think it’s a bit expensive, it’s a good product for those who don’t want to scoop a litter box again.

And thinking about it, if you have this one, you can probably go away on vacation for a few days and not have to worry about getting a cat sitter. As long as you make sure to provide enough food and fresh water. I wouldn’t be gone for more than a few days though. Cats do get lonely.

One disadvantage to it is that you have to do some plumbing work to install it. Not complicated stuff, but you need a little bit of plumbing knowledge. What needs to be connected is a t connector – one split to the cat genie and the other split to the toilet (if the bathroom is where you want to keep it). You’ll need one for the water to come in and wash and another one for when it flushes the waste and what not away.

And also, if you have a small bathroom, it may not fit. Alternately, you can keep it in the kitchen, washroom, laundry room, or garage if it has a plumbing connection.

Talking about disadvantages, some people have reported that the cleaning process releases all the poop smell and makes it smell in their whole apartment. Others say there is no smell. So, who knows. It all depends on your cat and how bad his or her poop smells . . .

How To Rid Your Home Of Cat Urine Smell

If you have one or several cats, you will likely one day have to deal with cleaning up cat pee. Not the most pleasant thought, but stuff happens.

There are products out there that are made for just this particular duty. But if you read their reviews, you might find that there are always people who do not have any success with these products. So, is it the products or is it the way they work?

How do you really clean up cat urine to get rid of the smell?

Fresh cat pee can easily be cleaned up with white vinegar. It will neutralize the ammonia in the urea and get rid of the smell. You have to make sure you get every last drop of urine.

If however, you find out that your cat had an accident days later because of the smell, then you need to use a product that will attack the bacteria that have now colonized in that pee. You have to soak ALL affected areas with the enzyme solution for it to work successfully. Follow the instructions on whichever product you choose to the letter. You may have to apply several times per instructions. If the pee has gotten into the padding of your carpet, you will need to apply enough solution to reach that padding to attack the bacteria living there now. Once you open up the product, you have a very limited time to use the enzymes. They need to be alive to work.

The top 5 selling cat urine cleaners are the following:

Fling Ama String Cat Toy – A Motorized String Toy!

You know the classic picture of a cat and a ball of yarn. Well, the Fling Ama String Cat Toy brings the charm and allure of the string to your cat in a motorized version.

Fling Ama String Cat ToyThe name is just silly to me, but cats love the silly toy.

This toy attaches to a doorknob and it needs 2 AA batteries to operate. What it does is it has a long colorful string on it that the motor turns around and around. So it goes down the front and up the back of the toy. You know how cats love to play peek-a-boo with toys. So for them, seeing the string disappear and reappear gets them really going.
